What Happens If My Baby Won’t Sleep During a Newborn Session?

Let me start with this: you don’t need to stress about keeping your baby awake prior to their session or stress about whether or not they will sleep...

Truly. If I had a dollar for every parent who walked into my studio saying,

“Just so you know… they haven’t slept all morning” or "all they do is sleep" (and then baby proceeds to not sleep a wink)...

I’d probably be answering this from a beach somewhere.

And yet… we still get beautiful images. Every single time.

Babies Don’t Need to Be Perfect—They Just Need to Be Themselves

Newborn sessions are completely baby-led. That means we pause when they need to eat, soothe when they need comfort, and go at a pace that works for them, not a clock.

Some babies come in sleepy and stay that way.

Others… have a little more personality right out of the gate.

Both are completely normal.

I Have a Few Tricks Up My Sleeve

After years of working with newborns, I’ve learned a thing or two (okay… a lot).

Your session isn’t just “taking pictures”- it’s:

* Gentle posing designed to keep baby comfortable

* A warm, cozy studio environment

* White noise and soothing techniques

* Lots of patience (and a little bit of magic)

Most babies *do* fall asleep once they’re settled… even if they didn’t start that way.

And If They Don’t Sleep? We Pivot.

Here’s the part most people don’t realize…

We don’t *need* a fully asleep baby to create beautiful images. (Now for certain poses, yes we do need a sleepy baby... but it's entirely possible to get great shots while they are awake)

Wide-eyed shots?

Little yawns?

Those alert expressions?

The details?

They’re just as meaningful—and sometimes even more unique. Your baby is my boss and I will follow their lead.

Breaks Are Built In (And Encouraged)

If baby needs to eat… we will eat. (Both of us, probably haha! I'm always down for a snack)

If baby needs to be held… we will snuggle.

If baby needs a minute… we will take it.

There is no rush, no pressure, and absolutely no expectation for your baby to “perform.”

The Bottom Line

You don’t need to have a “perfect” baby for a perfect session.

You just need to show up.

I’ll take care of the rest.

If your little one has been keeping you on your toes lately, I promise you’re not alone. And you’re still going to walk away with images you love.
